Markets for Science Fiction, Fantasy, Historical Fantasy, Horror and Other Speculative Fiction

Do you have a Speculative Fiction story that you want to have published?

Short stories are a great way to get started in the industry. They are not as time consuming as a full-length novel, and writing them can teach you a lot about story and structure that you can apply to your major works. When it comes time to submit your full-length manuscript to an agent or a publisher, it can help to have an existing resume of legitimately published short stories in that particular genre.

There is still a fairly good market out there for Speculative Fiction short stories, and with more options to publish online, it is definitely worth a look.

Be aware, however, that publishing with a "vanity publisher" is not going to do you any favours. This includes any website or magazine that publishes EVERYTHING it receives, or that charges you a fee to include your work. Remember that no legitimate publisher will charge you to be in print - it should be the other way around! You will probably not make very much for a short story, but that is rarely the point - apart from the love of writing (of course!) you should look at it as a way to build your name in the industry and build your fan base at the same time.
